Actor/Director applications for Sydney/Brisbane 2009 will open in August.
Actor/Director applications now open for Melbourne Short+Sweet.

Short+Sweet Sydney 2009 will run for five weeks at two venues: Newtown Theatre (five weeks) and Seymour Centre Downstairs Theatre (starting one week later, for four weeks). During the festival, the world’s best ten minute plays will be presented, and compete for the chance to perform at the Gala Final and win fabulous prizes.

Each play has its own director and cast, so you will see the work of some of Sydney’s – and Australia’s – most talented up and coming, as well as experienced, theatre artists.

Any performance of Short+Sweet is an experience – you see ten plays that can range from outrageous comedy to political satire to melodrama, absurd, seriously intellectual and kitchen-sink, have vastly different cast sizes, and their own directorial flavour.

If you as an audience member don’t particularly take to one play, well, you might like the next! There will be five plays, then interval, then another five plays at every performance.

The Short+Sweet Sydney 2009 Festival is comprised of three sections – Top 90, Wildcards and the Gala Final.

Top 90
Each week, at each of two theatres, there will be a different program of ten exciting new plays.
With five weeks at Newtown Theatre, and four weeks at Seymour Centre Downstairs Theatre, there are nine programs of ten plays each – our Top 90.

The Top 90 plays will be staged as full productions, and each program of ten plays will be presented over a week of four or six performances (depending on the theatre).

From each week’s program, a panel of judges will select a play to be performed at the Gala Final.

The audience has the opportunity to get involved by voting (by secret ballot) for their favourite play, which will be performed at the Gala Final and receive the People’s Choice Award.

Wildcards
Another 40 plays, the “Wildcards”, will be performed at four Saturday matinees at the Seymour Centre Downstairs Theatre. Each Wildcard matinee has a different program of ten plays.

Each Wildcard play will be presented without special lighting or sound cues, and each program will only be performed once. Wildcard matinees have received rousing acclaim from our audiences.

One of the Wildcard plays, as selected by a panel of judges, will be given entry into the Gala Final on Friday 22nd Feb + Saturday 23rd Feb.

Gala Final & Award Night
A gala performance of
the Top Eleven plays!

From the 140 plays that were performed in the Top 90 and the Wildcards, the audience and an industry panel select the Top Eleven plays to perform at the Gala Final and compete for fabulous prizes. Awards are presented for Best Overall Production, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Comedy Script, Best Drama Script and more.
