Short+Sweet
Now entering its seventh year, Short+ Sweet is the biggest festival of ten minute theatre in the world. Held annually at Newtown Theatre and the Seymour Centre in Sydney, and for the second year at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, the festival has already helped launch the careers of countess theatre professionals.
Featuring over 150 of the best ten minute plays from local and international writers, Short+Sweet utilizes the talents of Sydney and Melbourne’s best young and established directors, actors and technical personnel to produce some of the best theatre on the planet.
Short+ Sweet starts with a call for submissions from playwrights and independent theatre companies. Last year over 1200 scripts were received! Assessors read the scripts and produce a shortlist. New and established directors select one play each, and cast the roles, primarily with actors seen at the Short+Sweet open auditions. Hundreds of actors get to perform in Short+ Sweet. During the Festival, Short+ Sweet presents ten different plays each week, and climaxes with a gala final and awards night, complete with a panel of industry judges. Short+Sweet Melbourne 2007 awarded over $32,000 of prizes.
An education program for participants is also provided through Masterclass sessions with some of Australia’s and the world’s leading theatre professionals to help inspire the next generation of theatre artists.
